HOW TO COMBAT THE EFFECT OF FROST ON CROPS?
Winter in here, and with it comes the drop in temperatures, the dreaded cold snaps and frost on crops.
Frost damage occurs when ice forms inside the plant tissue, damaging its cells and producing a negative effect on yields, as well as a depreciation in the quality of the product.
There are various methods to combat the effects of these temperature drops that reach freezing water levels. These methods can be passive; such as varietal selection, appropriate pruning, avoiding tillage during frost-prone periods, etc. Or active methods; such as heat supply or sprinkler irrigation.
The purpose of the frost protection system using sprinkler irrigation is to keep crops above their critical temperature (Tc) by using the latent heat released when water changes from liquid (water) to solid (ice) to protect the plant from frost.
To avoid the damage caused by frost on the crop, a good ally is to have an irrigation controller that adapts to the needs of each installation and allows you to activate anti-freeze irrigation.
